Growing guide

Orchid genera

A guide to the genera of the family Orchidaceae, arranged to help novice growers.

Terrestrial orchids

These orchids grow naturally in the ground, often in forested areas with light ranging from shade to filtered or full sun.

Calanthe · Ludisia · Paphiopedilum · Spathoglottis

Cool-growing epiphytes

These orchids generally prefer cooler conditions and should be protected from frost. Long periods below 5°C can cause damage.

Cattleya · Cymbidium · Oncidium · Zygopetalum

Intermediate to hot-growing epiphytes

These are often the easiest orchids to grow in hot tropical climates. They grow best with a minimum temperature of 15–20°C.

Brassia · Bulbophyllum & Cirrhopetalum · Epidendrum · Dendrobium & Durabaculum · Miltonia · Phalaenopsis · Vanda

Australian native terrestrial orchids

Collection from the wild is illegal. Their survival depends on annual infection by a suitable mycorrhizal fungus, making them difficult to grow.

Diuris · Diplodium · Arachnorchis & Caladenia · Thelymitra
